Visiting Austin or just wanting to check out somewhere new in the city? East Austin has everything you can ask for. From food trucks, coffee shops, and breweries you can pretty much find anything you are looking for in this part of town. East Austin is known for being amore low key type atmosphere at the bars and coffee shops, so if you are trying to avoid the chaotic Dirty 6th or Rainey this is a nice change of pace.

Here are three great breweries to check out while in East Austin.

Zilker Brewery Company and Taproom

1701 E 6th St, Austin, TX 78702

Started by a few Austin locals back in 2008 this brewery is small but makes up for that with a relaxing outdoor area while the taproom is closed for COVID. Right off of 6th street it provides a low key venue where you can bask in the sun, bring your dog and people watch. With a wide selection of beer options from a coffee stout to a passionfruit, peach, and honeydew Hazy IPA you can pretty much find a favorite for anyone who says they like beer. Also as an added bonus they have Spicy Boys food truck parked right out front, i recommend the spicy OG chicken with a side of tater tots.

Lazarus Brewing Company

1902 E 6th St, Austin, TX 78702

A Pastor starting a brewery? Now that would make anyone wake up, from the dead, to come try such a unique place. A mere 800 feet away from Zilker Brewery down 6th street is the great Lazarus Brewing Company. Grab a coffee while you work in the morning, taco’s and chips and guac for lunch, or a beer after work this has everything you need for every occasion. From popular beer names like Walks on Water (my favorite) and 40 days and 40 nights this place is perfect to visit with a group. Drink a beer, look up into the nights sky, and give thanks that such a great place like this exists.

Central Machine Brewing

4824 E Cesar Chavez St, Austin, TX 78702

Looking like rusty and beat up this building is anything but that. From the inside (picture is taken from the back) it looks like an art gallery, mixed with a wedding venue, mixed with a brewery. Despite being a microbrewery it has a fully functioning bar with plenty of cocktails to choose, pizza and bar food, and a selection of their 7 beers to choose from. Check out their websites for live events from live music, movie nights, or even reverse happy hours where you can get $5 burgers and half off pitchers from 9pm-12pm! Off of East Ceaser Chavez st. this is a few miles down the road from Lazarus and if you are driving make sure you park in the back off of East 5th street.

If you want to wander around the city and are looking for cool places check out Wandri. A recommendation app that lets you add your favorite places to the map and share with others! Download on iOS or Android .
